Corporate Consumerism

Today was the first day of school! At 8:00 this morning, Craig and I went to the first class of the day, Drawing 1. We started off the class by going over the class syllabus. Basic stuff for the course. The cool thing is that it outlines our 6 homework assignments that we will get, including our final. The final project will be a 4 foot by 4 foot drawing, which is pretty crazy. Craig and I are thinking of just taping the paper to the wall in our bedroom, and using that to create the drawing, because we don’t have any other space that would allow us to create something so large.

After going over the syllabus, Justin (our teacher) passed out a packet of drawings for us to discuss. We talked about things such as line, value, and composition of pieces such as van gough, and some of his own personal work.

Once we were done with the discussions, he gave us an in class assignment to go out and walk around the Pearl District and find things outside and compose a “piece of art”, explainging that you do not need the conventional tools (pencil, paper, paint etc…) to create art.

Craig and I found some leaves, and flowers, and created our stuff out of that. Craig created a tribal man, who was holding a stick, and had a flower as a head, while mine was more like a colage. I wraped my leaf up, and tied it with caution tape, and put on a receipt and mcdonalds sticker that I found on the ground. I called it my “death stick”.

We had an hour and a half to compose our “art”. When we got back to the classroom, we put all of the “art
on a table, and discussed it with everyone in the class. Our teacher encouraged us to dig deep into the meaning of the art, and try to figure out what it represented, as well as how the materials used influenced the mood of the art.

Once the discussion rolled around to my piece, the idea came up of Corporate Consumerism, and how we as people impose ourselves into nature. They went a little deeper than I had thought while creating it, but seemed to be the general idea. After that though, it seemed like the idea of Corporate Consumerism was brought up a lot. Craig and I started joking to eachother that all art was Corporate Consumerism.

After that discussion was over, Justin went over our homework assignment, and we were let go.

At 6pm today we go back for another class. I will be doing Principles of Visual Communication, while Craig will be in Intro to Computer Graphics. This will be the first class we have ever taken apart, so that should be interesting. Luckily we get to commute together still, and this should give us a lot more to talk about.

Communication

Today, I had my first class of Intro to Interactive media. This call is basically about how to communicate using digital media. The class seems like a very wide variety of topics.

Upon completion of IMD101, students will:
- be aware of the history of digital media, basic definitions, terms and concepts used
- be prepared to use artistic creativity and understand how it merges with technical
knowledge as both are applied to the creation of an Interactive Media project
- appreciate how the delivery medium affects design, development, and production of
interactive media.
- understand the limitations of various media formats regarding bandwidth, transfer rates,
bit-depth, and the resulting effects on image and sound quality
- display knowledge of the theories behind digital media such as photography, video,
audio and animation
- realize the importance of appropriate typography, especially as applied to interactive
projects
- recognize historical changes in the marketplace, future trends and employment
opportunities in the field of Interactive Media Design
- comprehend how to integrate the knowledge gained in general studies and foundation
classes into improved IMD projects
- know various techniques for integrating IMD classes with each other in order to create
more in depth projects and for the development of a portfolio

I am most excited about the final though, where we get to redesign the homepage of a website that we frequently use. The goal is to find 5 things wrong with them, and fix them with our new design.

Once again though, class was let out early, (2 hours early) and I was stuck around waiting for Craig. I was hungry, even though I had brought dinner, so I went down to whole foods. I bought a large cup of fruit, and fat free yogurt, and took it back to the student commons. Luckily Craig’s class got out early as well, so I wasn’t waiting around as long as I had to yesterday.

Craig is getting swamped with homework. So far he has homework in all three of his classes, where I only have major homework in 1 and then reading, and a small activity in another, and then reading for all of the classes.

In other news, we are official AIPD students…
Id Badges

Unfortunatly, they dont unlock the stair case like they are supposed to, so we will have to take them to get fixed tomorrow.

October 2nd, 2005

Not much happened today, Craig and I just relaxed, and unwound from the busy party. We also went to target, and best buy to get supplies for school. Target was a complete madhouse, and put us both in a bad mood, and best buy is also in a really busy party of town. We were ready to go back home and relax after that.

We got a walk in without being poured on, which was nice, and then relaxed and went to bed early.

I forgot to mention this yesterday, but when we came home from the store, we found a beautiful desk just sitting in front of the dumpster. This was too good to just let go, so we loaded it into Craig’s truck and took it home.

We felt a little silly hauling it in, and got some strange stares, but the desk is too perfect, and we are glad we picked it up. So far the cats seem like they will be the new owners of it.

October 1st, 2005

Today was our party at our clubhouse with all of my family. Yesterday, while Craig and I were trying to figure out what to do for the party as far as food goes, we came up with the idea of making Pizza (from scratch). There was a recipe book inside the store that we looked at for the general ingredients. Basically it was yeast, sugar, salt, flour, and extra virgin olive oil. We bought those, and then got the cheese, pepperoni, salami, bell pepper, mushrooms, and olives.

We made two test pizza’s yesterday to try them out. They were absolutely awesome.

Basically, you mix the yeast with water, and then stir it, and let it sit for 5 minutes, and then combine it with the flour, olive oil, salt, and sugar. Then you put that in the mixer and spin it around for a while. Once it is dough-like, you let it sit for an hour and rise. after that, spread it out, apply sauce and cheese+toppings, and cook at 450 for 20 minutes.

Here are some photos from creation to finished product.

After the first test pizza’s were made, we were ready for the real deal. This morning, we woke up and cleaned up the house, got a few things from the store that we were out of, and got to work. We decided to make 6 pizza’s for the party. We got a little late start, but once we figured out there was an oven in the clubhouse where we were having a party, that lifted a lot of weight off of our shoulders. Guests started to arrive, and we began to unpack all the food into the clubhouse.

Everyone brought a thing or two to eat, and you wouldn’t believe the amount of food that we had. It was all so good. Ranging from chicken to pizza to baked beans, there was a ton of variety.

The pizza’s were a huge hit, it was great that we were able to pull them off.

Here are some photos from the actual party. It was so busy that I didn’t get too many.

Unfortunately, it took almost the entire party to figure out how to set up the theater. But there was about an hour of time where the xbox was set up, and able to be played. It was pretty cool seeing it on such a large screen, and looked like a lot of fun.

All in all, the party was a huge success, and was a lot of fun!

Day 3 Orientation

Today started off early. We arrived at the college at 9:30. The first session was an hour and a half brief about the computer labs, and equipment cage. Also, we got a run through of lab rules, and how to successfully use our OLS account. This account has all our financial information, our grades, current schedule, and email.

After that, we went to our first workshop. We decided to go to the student panel. Here we heard from STAC (student action committee) which is basically student government. The president is in Game Art and Design, so he was very interesting to hear from. They told us about different events going on at the school, and we were able to ask questions.

After that, it was lunch time. Today they had a table set up with fondue, different veggies, and then chocolate fondue with strawberries, angel food cake, marshmallows etc. Lunch was a little longer than needed (1 hour) so after we finished eating, we went to the student store. We bought a window decal, and went to the parking garage to put it on Craig’s truck.

After lunch, we went to another session of Unreal Tournament. It was a much smaller group, so it was a little less hectic. This time Craig won a lot of the runs, and I did a little better than I did yesterday.

After an hour of that, we went to another workshop, which was who what where in portland. By this time, we were just hearing the same information over and over again, so while they had great info, it was getting a little old to hear about. I guess this wouldn’t be a problem for those who only went to one day of orientation, but for us it was getting a little old.

Once that was over, it was time for my program. I was pretty tired by the time we arrived, but I was excited. There were two people there to talk to us, our Department Director, and one of the teachers. The teacher didn’t talk much, and most of the hour and a half was spent listening to the Department Director.

I was sort of disappointed in the speech. Partly because I was tired, and partly because the guy rambled with little excitement in his voice. He talked more about school policies (which is what I had been hearing the entire day), instead of the department itself. However, it was still nice to see the people who would be in my Major. There are about 20 people starting as freshman, which is pretty huge. Almost all of them were older, and seemed to have some background in Graphic Design. It should be interesting to see what they can bring to class given that prior knowledge.

Art Kits!

Today’s orientation was a lot of fun. We showed up at 9:30 A.M. after stopping at Safeway for muffins and refreshments. First on our list was an hour and a half of information about Craig’s degree of Game Art and Design. The guy who spoke was extremely interesting. He had a great sense of humor, and was very honest about the program. He freaked me out about how intense it will be, and I’m not even involved in the program! It definitely sounds like a lot of fun though.

After that, we listened to a lecture on jump starting your career. It was also very interesting to listen to. They spoke a lot about internships, and how to maximize resources in order to get where you need to be by the time you register. This got me very excited about the idea of internships. It will be about 2 years before I can do one, but it will be a great experience.

After that, we had an hour break for lunch. We decided to go get our art kits while there wasn’t’t a line. When we got to the place that they stored them, we were blown away by their size, and how many there were. In addition to that, as they rolled them over to us, they informed us that they weighed 80 pounds, and the fact that we would be required to take them to class!

After we got the art kits, we took them to the car. By the time we got there, my arm was already tired and Craig had to roll it the rest of the way. They barely fit into the front of his truck! I am not sure what we will do when it is raining, because they won’t fit inside the car, and the truck bed isn’t’t covered…oh well, we will figure it out.

Once we finished with the art kits, we went to our next workshop: Playing unreal with 20 other people. This was probably one of the most fun I have had playing a first person shooter. There was so much energy in the room, and it was so chaotic in game, yet so fun.
Once we finished with that, we came home to further inspect our art kits. Here are some photos

Day One Orientation

Just got home from the first wave of orientation. There was actually a lot less to do than I thought. We showed up and had the option of going to the third floor, or the second floor. We decided to go to the third floor, mostly because that’s where the elevator took us :) We heard from 4 different groups ranging from financial aid, to counseling, and got an hours worth of information. After that was over, the schedule had a few hours of “tie up” work to do, which Craig and I had already finished. We saw a note on the student store saying that Art kits would be available in an hour, so with nothing to do, we decided to go to lunch. We ate outside, even though it was freezing, but the food was great.

When we got back, the hour was up, and there was a new note saying it would be another hour before the art kits were ready. Instead of sticking around and paying for another hour of parking, we decided to come home.

Tomorrow is going to be a full day though… hopefully we will get a good nights sleep.

Ready, Set, Go!

Orientation begins tomorrow! After 6 months of waiting, school is finally getting going. This is all that I can think about recently, and I can hardly wait. Yesterday I met a very nice person named Meggan who has helped me be more at ease by explaining her experiences at the school. Now I am not filled with anxiety, only excitement. In typical Nicole fashion, I may be taking on too much at once. After 3 days of orientation, I will be throwing a party for all of my family members as a belated “house warming”. I invited 26 people, and from what it looks like most of them will be able to attend. I have the clubhouse at our apartment complex rented out, so we can watch movies, and play x box on the large tv. I put a specific dish on everyone’s invite, so it will be a potluck, relieving a lot of stress and financial responsibility from craig and I.

Craig and I set up the bedroom yesterday so that we now have a craft section set up. On top of that now our bed is not in front of the window, which makes it a lot easier for me to sleep at night.

Me - the slacker

Third day of class is over. Today I had Intro to Computer Graphics, and Craig had Language of Animation & Film.

The class actually went by very fast, compared to my other classes. The teacher seems very nice. He works at www.kl-design.com/site/main.html, and his portfolio is at www.dailyminefield.com

So far, I have been let out of class early in all three classes I have had without Craig. This means I have had to wait around until he gets out. I am starting to become comfortable enough with the campus to be alone, but I just wish my teachers would keep me the full duration.

Also, it is starting to upset me how little homework I am getting, and how much Craig is getting. I know my classes will pick up, and there will probably be a rush now to make up for the week where they didn’t assign much. I wish they would keep me in class the extra 2 hours, and assign homework, so that I wouldn’t be rushed in the future.

I can’t believe I am complaining about the lack of homework I am getting….I guess I just feel bad that Craig is getting so over worked, while I barely have anything to do.

Here is my week 1 schedule, vs. Craig’s

Unproductive Day

Today has been far less productive than I would have hoped for. It was our first day off of school. Tomorrow we go back for freshman seminar, but luckily, we don’t have to be there until 9am, instead of 8am.

However, we did get to Office Depot to get supplies that we needed for school. We bought notebooks, and folders to hold all of our paper, as well as CD-R and sleeves to hold them in.
I am appalled at how expensive CD’R are even today. I thought they would be much cheaper, especially now that the trend seems to be DVD’s but it looks like they are still on par with each other as far as price goes.

I am currently working on trying to learn XHTML, as well as PHP to help make my website better. Therefore the look of my site may change.
However, I do like the color scheme of it, but I am going to try to make it more visually interesting. Right now I think it looks a little empty, but we will see what happens.

Finne!

Finally finnished assignment #1 for Drawing 1. It was hard to come up with so many different ideas for lines!

The part I am most proud of is that outline around the boxes :P That part wasnt assigned hehe.

Yesterday

I forgot to write yesterday.

Yesterday was our last class of the week; freshman seminar! I thought that this class was going to be like the milk and cookies class that our friend Jeff attended back at Shasta College.

Once we got the syllabus, we learned it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park though.

This class has a little bit of everything, but it seems like an English class in disguise. We will have to do about 3-4 papers which our teacher calls short (3 pages).

Our homework for that class is to go to PICA, an art museum in Portland. Once we are there, we have to pick one piece of art, and go through the 8 steps of Omniphasism.

1. Take time to look at the image.
2. Write down concrete images of what you see in the picture (person, dog etc…)
3. Write down any association you have with that image (person - Craig - boyfriend - love - happiness) keep going with associations until you can’t think of any more
4. Circle the most important association.
5. Write down the beginning concrete word, with the association (person: love)
6. Make it personal; write a short sentence explaining the association. (Craig, my boyfriend is a person who I love greatly)
7. Write it out in explanation, and let the idea flow). Craig is a very important person in my life who showed me how to love someone, as well as how to love myself for who I am………

Basically it gets really long winded and off topic, but I guess that is what our teacher wants…she is one of those “creative types”.

In addition to that homework, we have 3 reading assignments. One she handed out to us, and the other two are in the library. I believe we have to take notes in SQR3 format for all of them.

That means you have to write a summary, and then do 3 quotes from it, and explain them.

Sounds like this class is going to be easy as pie….lol yea right!

After class yesterday, we went to Powell’s technical book store. That is one of the coolest bookstores ever. Instead of one shelf of books that Craig and I enjoy, there was an entire store

Pool Tournament

After a day of doing homework, we were happy to get out of the house. We went down to Keizer to visit my dad and my family for a good old pool tournament. I didn’t get many photos but here is what I did get.

Rosalie’s niece Tiff was there, she was a lot of fun to meet.

Today was definitely an eventful day.

It started off with some drama about a very large cell phone bill, from when Craig and I moved. We had to use the phone for two weeks, while we didn’t have a home phone. Unfortunately, it turns out we got charged roaming, and long distance charges.

All is better now; I just wanted to thank my dad, for helping pay for the charges, and to my mom for her continuous financial support. Without her, Craig and I would not be living where we are now, enabling us to go to school.

After all that was over, it was off for a long day of homework. Craig and I went into school, so that we could have access to a Mac Lab. It ended up not being extremely important, but it was still good that we went, because it gave us a little time to get more acquainted with the way things work with Macs.

When we were done at the lab, we decided to go to PICA, because we found out it was only a block away from our school. Once we got there, it was locked. We walked around the block to try to find a different entrance, but there wasn’t one. When we returned to the front, there was a guy who worked there outside. He seemed a little confused that we were there to see the gallery, and said they don’t really have one anymore, it is just a place for some art, and then meetings and functions. He said to call back tomorrow.

I am a little worried on how we will get our assignment done, but I’m sure we will figure out what to do.

After that, we decided to go home, and finish our homework there. Once we got home, I got out of the car, and go to close it, and I slammed the corner into my shin. It hurt really badly, and instantly a big bump/bruise appeared.

Oh well, after like 8 hours of homework, and three hours of work, I am exhausted. We have to get up at 6am tomorrow, and be out of the house by 6:30 in order to get to class in time.

Next week is going to be busy, but if we can make it through tomorrow, all will be good!
